Antioxidants in Oilseeds, Vegetable Oils

Researchers are uncovering in oilseeds and vegetable oils a wealth of health giving trace substances that help prevent cancer and heart disease, a conference heard this week.

More work must be done to see how many of the wide range of phytonutrients and antioxidants can be isolated and spun off as added value products, biochemist Fereidoon Sahidi from Canada's Memorial University said.

Our scientists speaking at the edible oil conference in Istanbul described products in development or already on the market, such as red palm oil, being touted as full of natural Vitamins A and E.

Crude palm oil is the richest natural source of caoteniods, which the body utilizes as Vitamin, containing about 15 times more than carrots, said Chu-Sing Koh of the Malaysian Palm Oil Promotion Council.

It also has high levels of Vitamin E, and unlike many other natural sources contains both types of the Vitamins, tocopherols and tocotrienols, the latter having been shown in tests to kill breasts cancer cells, he said.

"In-vitro studies show tocotrienols are 40-60 times more potent as an antioxidant than tocopherols," said Koh, who heads the scientific and technical department of the Council.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals in the body, an excess of which can damage DNA and can cause cancer and heart disease. The Palm Oil council developed the technology to process a reddish cooking oil, marketed as Carotino that contains 80% of the carotenoid content of crude palm oil, Koh said.

The oilseed, Canola, known as rapeseed in Europe also contains a wealth of important trace components, Canadian scientist Elzbieta Kurowska told the conference.

Her research with KGK Synergize Inc. showed that several components were able to inhibit growth of cells of the five most common cancers in laboratory dishes.

In further trials, they identified one of the most promising elements and created an extract from canola meal rich in free phenolic acids, which reduce the incidence and size of skin cancer tumors in mice.

More research is needed to see if the extract can be made into a product to prevent skin cancer, one of the most widespread cancers, she said.
