Ontario (Canada) Government
investing more than C$1.7 million
to create centre dedicated to research into probiotics.
Ministry of Enterprise
Government of Ontario, Canada
MAY 2, 2002
The Ontario government is investing more than C$1.7 million to help create Canada's first centre dedicated to research into probiotics, Training, Colleges and Universities Minister Dianne Cunningham announced today on behalf of the Enterprise, Opportunity and Innovation Ministry Jim Flaherty
Located at the Lawson Health Research Institute at St. Joshpeh's Health Care in London, the new Canadian Research and Development Centre for Probioitcs will lead cutting-edge research into probiotics, which is replenishment of "good bacteria" to counteract diesease in human and animals. Probiotics researchers at the Centre will work in partnership with researchers at the University of Guelph and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.
"Probiotics has enormous promise to improve the quality of health for people both here in Ontario and around the world," says Cunningham. "This new Centre will also create jobs and strengthen Ontario's economy by giving the province a leading role in developing and exporting related therapeutic technologies."
The multi-disciplinary research at the Centre will explore ways to harness the body's probiotic organisms and proteins to counteract a variety of urinary and digestive diseases and infections. The research will also study
the use of probiotics and prebiotics (substances that promote the growth of good bacteria) as an alternative to antibiotics in the treatment of livestock for human consumption.
The provincial investment is being made through the Ontario Research Development Callenge Fund and will leverage C$4.2 million in additional financial support from both the private sector and research institute partners.
